TWD- Irish Soda Bread

Can someone please tell me when St Patrick's Day became a real holiday where you have to stage a leprechaun visit at your house, create shenanigans that said leprechaun did, and leave treats and goodies for your kids? I was getting a little annoyed with the whole Elf on the Shelf thing at Christmas this year, and now this? What happened to wearing green, maybe some corned beef and cabbage and calling it good? Am I being the St Patrick's Day Scrooge?
Anyhoo, this week's TWD is for Irish Soda Bread. This is about the easiest, quickest recipe ever. Mix flour, baking soda and salt in a bowl. Add buttermilk, pour in a pie plate. Bake and done!
I made this when I was home with a sick boy. When the rest of my family came home, Beansy said, "What's this? A giant dog treat?" Yes, I made a giant dog treat and left it on the stove. We don't have a dog.
She liked it so much, she did end up eating two pieces for lunch- one with ham and one with jam (Sam I Am. heehee). After hearing it was yummy, my sicky two year old declared, "I want some dog food, too!"
Carla and Cathleen will have the recipe!

  1. That's really cute...and totally agree with you about St. Patrick's, I felt like a horrible Mom because all I did was sneak green food coloring in the milk when the kids weren't looking. They didn't seem to care that no leprechaun traps were sprung or candy was left for them. And actually, I don't remember my Mom doing anything, we just wore green, if we remembered to!

  2. Cute story. I like the Dr. Seuss references. Funny to call it a dog treat. LOL!

  3. All holidays seemed to have morphed into all-out celebrations. I do not like it. I'll sit with you on the grinch couch. Your loaf looks great! And incidently, I did give some of mine to my dog. He liked it just as much as we did. ;)

  5. So true about the hype - I saw tons of leprechaun "trap" pictures and was....surprised. My family said it looks like a giant hamburger bun! Great job!

  8. Wow, I did absolutely nothing for St. P's day. I must be a really wretched mom :-) I am SO glad that my girls were in high school by the time Elf on a Shelf became popular.

  9. So funny! Well I think it looks nothing like dog food, it looks great! And I also hate the elf on the shelf thing and we don't do anything all that exciting for St. Patty's day. Hopefully that makes you feel a little better about being a scrooge. :)
